Guided Marsh vs. Self Guided: Which Duck Hunt Is Right for You?
It's one of the most common questions we get: should I book a guided marsh hunt or go self guided? The honest answer is that it depends on what you're looking for. Here's a straightforward breakdown of both options so you can decide.
What a Guided Marsh Hunt Looks Like
On a guided marsh hunt, one of our licensed guides handles everything before you arrive. The blind is selected based on where birds have been moving. Decoys are set. Calls are ready. You show up at shooting light and focus on hunting.
Our guides know Saginaw Bay. They've been hunting it for years and they know which spots produce under which conditions — wind direction, temperature, time of season. That local knowledge is what you're paying for, and it makes a real difference on tough mornings when birds aren't flying the obvious lines.
Guided marsh hunts are capped at 3 hunters. That's intentional. Smaller groups mean better blind setups, less noise, and more shooting opportunities per person.
What a Self Guided Hunt Looks Like
Self guided hunting is exactly what it sounds like — you run your own hunt. We provide the blind and the decoys. You bring your license, your gun, your shells, and your dog if you have one. You set up how you want, call how you want, and hunt on your own schedule.
The advantage is independence. Some hunters prefer to run their own operation — they have their own calling style, their own decoy spread preferences, their own pace. Self guided hunting gives you that freedom on water that's already been scouted and set up for success.
It's also typically more affordable than a guided hunt, which makes it a good option for groups that want to hunt multiple days without the full guided rate every morning.
Which One Is Right for You?
Here's a simple way to think about it:
- Book a guided hunt if you're new to Saginaw Bay, you want the best odds on a single-day trip, or you want to learn from someone who hunts this water every season.
- Book a self guided hunt if you're an experienced waterfowler who wants to run your own show, you're hunting multiple days and want to manage costs, or you have a group that prefers to operate independently.
Either way, you're hunting proven Saginaw Bay water with access to our lodge, our equipment, and our knowledge of what's been moving.
What About Sea Duck Hunts?
Sea duck hunting is a separate category entirely — open water, layout boats, diving ducks. If you've never hunted sea ducks, it's worth doing at least once. Scoters, long-tails, and buffleheads on the open Bay are a different experience from marsh hunting, and Saginaw Bay is one of the best places in the Great Lakes to do it.
